Sheriffs Drop Opposition to Digital Asset Market Clarity Act

The National Sheriffs’ Association officially withdrew its opposition to the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act this Thursday. In a letter sent to Senate leadership, the group representing over 3,000 elected sheriffs noted that the legislation is complex and requires further consideration. The organization stated it will step back to let the legislative process move forward without their interference.

This change of heart is a significant development. Earlier this year, the association warned that specific sections of the bill could act as a shield for illicit activity. They argued that exempting decentralized finance protocols from money transmitter rules would make it harder to trace criminal transactions, potentially aiding those who want to launder money or evade sanctions.

The White House reportedly stepped in last month to meet with law enforcement groups to address these concerns directly. While this move removes a major source of friction, the path forward for the bill remains difficult. With unresolved ethics provisions and a tight schedule before the upcoming November elections, observers remain cautious about whether the bill can actually become law this year.
