Sheriffs Association Drops Opposition to Crypto Clarity Act

The National Sheriffs Association has officially dropped its opposition to the Clarity Act, removing a notable hurdle for the proposed cryptocurrency legislation. In a letter sent to Senate leaders, the group stated it is changing its stance to neutral because of the complex nature of the issue. The association previously warned that the bill might help criminals by exempting certain developers from money transmitter rules.

Lawmakers are now planning a vote on the bill this month after delays pushed back the original August schedule. The Clarity Act aims to create a much needed regulatory framework that distinguishes between digital assets classified as securities, commodities, or payment stablecoins. An updated version of the legislation introduced in July also bans government officials and their families from issuing or promoting crypto.

Crypto traders and industry participants should watch the Senate closely as the legislative process moves forward. While major financial institutions and lawmakers support the latest draft, past political delays show that getting the bill across the finish line will still take careful negotiation.
