Schwab Renames Crypto ETF to Highlight AI Tech

Schwab Asset Management has updated the name of its 232 million dollar crypto equity ETF. The fund is now called the Schwab Crypto Thematic Natural Language Processing ETF. Despite the change to the name, the ticker symbol remains STCE and the underlying investment strategy is unchanged from when the fund first launched four years ago.

The fund does not hold direct cryptocurrency assets. Instead, it tracks a basket of companies involved in the digital asset space. The selection process uses natural language processing to scan company documents for crypto themes, a method that Schwab has actually been using since the fund started in 2022. The expense ratio and the core investment objective also remain the same.

Current holdings in the fund include Bitcoin miners like Bitdeer and CleanSpark, along with other companies like Trump Media and Technology Group. This variety shows that the fund targets the broader ecosystem rather than just specific coins. While Schwab has brought more attention to its use of technology, the move appears to be a branding update rather than a shift in how the money is managed.

Investors watching STCE should note that the portfolio holdings shift based on market values and internal index rules. While the name change highlights the artificial intelligence behind the stock selection, the fund remains focused on the same industry themes it has followed since inception.
