Scammer Uses Uber Driver to Steal $14,000 from Texas Resident

A Texas woman recently lost $14,000 after falling for a clever impersonation scheme. The victim received a call from someone claiming to be with USAA, who told her there was a suspicious charge on her account. The caller instructed her to hand her physical debit card to an Uber driver dispatched to her home address, claiming it was part of a security protocol.

The driver delivered the card to a 26 year old accomplice, who proceeded to spend the money at various retail stores and ATMs. Surveillance footage eventually helped police track down the suspect, who now faces criminal charges for credit card abuse and identity fraud.

This incident highlights how scammers are moving beyond digital phishing to coordinate real world logistics. Security experts suggest that legitimate banks will never send a ride share driver to collect a client's card. Always verify bank concerns by calling the official number printed on the back of your card, rather than trusting the person on the other end of an incoming call.
