Sam Bankman Fried has officially taken his fight to the United States Supreme Court. His legal team filed a petition on Thursday asking the high court to review his 2023 fraud conviction and 25 year prison sentence, marking the final legal option available to the former crypto executive.

A federal jury convicted Bankman Fried in November 2023 following the massive collapse of the FTX exchange and its sister trading firm, Alameda Research. Judge Lewis Kaplan handed down the 25 year sentence alongside an 11 billion dollar forfeiture. An appeals court previously rejected his push for a new trial, ruling that trial judges were correct to exclude arguments about potential customer repayments.

For everyday crypto traders and FTX creditors, this Supreme Court filing changes very little on the ground. The ongoing bankruptcy asset recovery process operates entirely separate from the criminal case. Creditor repayments continue moving forward regardless of what the justices decide.

Market watchers should note that the Supreme Court receives thousands of petitions each year and agrees to hear only a tiny fraction of them. Meanwhile, prediction market traders on Polymarket currently price his chances of walking free in 2026 at a mere two percent.
