Ripple CEO Targets $11 Billion Gold Move as Proof for Crypto

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse recently criticized the Dutch central bank for moving 86 tonnes of gold between New York, Ottawa, and London. He argued that the process is a perfect example of how outdated global finance remains. Much of the 11 billion dollar operation was simply a paper exercise, as the bank sold assets in one location and repurchased them in another rather than moving the physical metal.

Garlinghouse compared this friction to the growth of digital assets, which have expanded significantly over the last decade. While central banks continue to rely on slow, complex logistics to secure their reserves, he suggests that blockchain technology offers a more efficient alternative for settling value. He noted that while major financial institutions are testing ledger systems, final settlement still depends on aging infrastructure.

The Dutch central bank explained that the move was about improving the tradability of its reserves to prepare for potential crises. While crypto advocates often highlight the speed of stablecoins and distributed ledgers, central banks remain focused on physical vaults and legal certainty. Whether digital assets can eventually replace these traditional methods depends on matching that level of institutional trust.
