Prediction markets saw a massive jump in activity during the second quarter of 2026. Total volume reached 113.8 billion dollars, marking a 48.7 percent increase over the previous quarter. June was a standout month for the sector, posting a record 50.7 billion dollars in volume, which is nearly double the average monthly totals seen earlier this year.

The surge in activity is tied directly to a heavy calendar of sports. Events like the NBA Finals, Wimbledon, and major soccer tournaments pushed betting interest to new heights. Polymarket saw 81 percent of its June volume come from sports contracts, a significant shift from the 40 percent share recorded in January. While Polymarket remains a key player, Kalshi has successfully captured a larger slice of the market, growing its share to nearly 59 percent.

Institutional interest is also ramping up as traditional finance enters the space. Cboe Global Markets recently introduced binary options tied to the S&P 500, with support from major brokers like Interactive Brokers. Meanwhile, Meta is reportedly working on a new prediction app called Arena. While the project currently focuses on points rather than cash, it shows the growing mainstream interest in forecasting real world outcomes.

Looking ahead, the mix of high profile sports events and new infrastructure from firms like Cboe suggests that prediction markets will keep growing. Traders should watch whether these platforms can maintain this momentum once the current sports season slows down, or if the arrival of institutional products will provide enough support to keep volume high.
