Missouri Homeowners Win $250 Million Property Tax Settlement

Jackson County officials in Missouri have reached a $250 million settlement to provide property tax relief to homeowners. This agreement follows a class action lawsuit which alleged that property assessments violated state rules that cap tax increases at 15 percent. More than 207,000 properties are eligible for the relief program.

The settlement covers tax credits spread over three billing cycles and includes direct refunds for residents who have moved away since the 2023 reassessment. Additionally, the county set aside $6 million to cover legal costs for homeowners who paid professionals to contest their property valuations.

This resolution stands as the largest class action settlement in the history of the county. The deal still requires final court approval before payments can be issued to residents. Those involved should wait for official notices regarding the distribution of funds over the coming three years.
