Massachusetts Shuts Down Predatory Collector in $52M Settlement
Thousands of consumers are getting major debt relief after state officials banned a predatory collector for illegal vehicle seizures.
coinbeat.newsMassachusetts authorities just secured a massive fifty two million dollar settlement against a local debt collection operation. State Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell announced the agreement after accusing the firm and its owner of using aggressive tactics, including seizing vehicles that had no connection to car loans and taking cars that served as a person's only way to get to work.
Under the terms of the consent judgment, Judgment Acquisitions Unlimited, Champion Funding Inc, and owner Andrew Metcalf are permanently banned from buying, selling, or collecting debts from state residents. They also cannot obtain a debt collector license in the state ever again. A suspended penalty of six hundred fifty thousand dollars will apply if the defendants break the agreement.
This resolution stems from a lawsuit filed in Suffolk Superior Court that accused the companies of violating state consumer protection laws. Officials noted that thousands of families will finally see relief from unlawful practices while dealing with rising living costs.
While this case centers on traditional consumer debt rather than digital assets, regulatory crackdowns and consumer protection actions remain a major focus for financial authorities. Traders should keep an eye on how state and federal watchdogs continue applying pressure to unfair business practices across the broader financial sector.
