Massachusetts Residents See $170M in Medical Debt Wiped Out

A significant relief effort is currently underway in Massachusetts, where 140,000 residents are having their medical debt cleared. The Atrius Health Equity Foundation partnered with Undue Medical Debt and the Massachusetts Health and Hospital Association to erase a total of $170 million in outstanding healthcare costs.

Letters notifying recipients about the debt forgiveness started arriving in mailboxes on July 7. Residents do not need to apply for this relief, as the organizations used financial criteria to identify eligible individuals automatically. The program specifically helps low to moderate income families in Eastern Massachusetts, particularly those living in Essex and Middlesex counties.

This is the largest debt cancellation project in state history. Individual relief amounts vary widely, ranging from $50 to $450,000. By removing the financial weight of these unpaid bills, the organizers hope to improve local life expectancy and ensure that families can access necessary care without fear of crushing debt.
