Kraken made history in March when it became the first crypto firm to win a Federal Reserve master account. This win was supposed to let the company move US dollars without needing a middleman bank. However, more than four months later, the account still is not operational. CEO Brian Mathena recently told lawmakers in Wyoming that the bank is still working to switch everything on and catch up with technical requirements.

Having a master account is a massive deal for crypto companies because it allows them to settle payments directly on the Fedwire system. Right now, Kraken still relies on Dart Bank to handle customer wire transfers. This direct access would likely save money and make operations much more efficient. It also helps the company as it moves toward a potential public listing in the future.

Winning this access was a rare feat, as federal officials often describe this type of approval as nearly impossible to get. Other banks that focus on digital assets have been flatly denied or are currently fighting legal battles for similar access. Kraken's approval is also temporary, lasting only one year with specific limits that have not been made public. Even members of Congress have asked the Fed for more details on the deal.

For now, the crypto exchange is rolling out its new banking features in phases, starting with big institutional clients. The industry is watching closely to see if Kraken can fully activate the account before its one year pilot period ends. Success here could set a standard for how other crypto firms interact with the traditional American banking system.
