Kalshi spent nearly one million dollars on federal lobbying during the first half of the year, almost matching its total spending from all of last year. The prediction market operator is racing to counter the American Gaming Association and other traditional gambling interests on Capitol Hill. Including outside firms, Kalshi pushed its total near 1.8 million dollars, setting a record for the company.

The friction started because prediction platforms are drawing retail users away from traditional sportsbooks. Casino operators view sports event contracts as direct competition that avoids state and tribal gaming rules. In June, the gambling industry pressured the Senate to ban sports contracts inside the proposed crypto market structure bill.

Former congressman Patrick McHenry noted that the casino lobby holds a structural head start because of its existing infrastructure in Washington. Meanwhile, prediction platforms are working hard to communicate their value to lawmakers.

Aside from the casino clash, prediction platforms face extra scrutiny over insider trading incidents. Several lawmakers have introduced bills to curb the practice, prompting platforms to tighten their own rules.

Traders should watch how Congress handles prediction market regulations in upcoming bills. The outcome will decide whether sports contracts remain a key part of decentralized betting platforms.
