Is AI Killing Traditional Bitcoin Mining?

At the same time, major firms like Core Scientific and TeraWulf are making much more money from renting out space for artificial intelligence and cloud computing than from mining crypto directly.

This shift is not about the machines themselves, because AI processors and crypto ASICs do the opposite jobs. Instead, the real competition is for power and land. AI companies need reliable electricity right away, and they are willing to pay top dollar for sites that already have grid connections. Mining companies spent years locking down these exact locations, making their real estate much more valuable as AI data centers.

Even so, artificial intelligence is unlikely to wipe out Bitcoin mining completely. AI needs steady and continuous power, while crypto rigs can easily turn on and off whenever cheap, stranded energy becomes available. As big companies convert their premium sites, older mining machines are moving to cheap renewable energy projects and remote locations.

Looking ahead, the mining industry is splitting into two clear paths. High quality power will keep flowing to artificial intelligence, while crypto mining will chase the cheapest unused energy on the planet. Bitcoin security relies on this natural balance, and miners will keep adapting as long as wasted power exists.
