Institutions Drive Record 72 Percent of Crypto OTC Flow

Institutional investors reached a record high by driving 72 percent of spot trading volume on major over the counter desks in the first half of 2026. This figure jumped significantly from 59 percent during the same period a year earlier. Wintermute shared the findings in a recent report, pointing out that Wall Street now largely sets the pace for the digital asset market.

Wintermute attributes the shift to a prolonged market slowdown that pushed casual retail traders toward traditional equities. As individual traders stepped back, institutional players like hedge funds, asset managers, and family offices filled the gap. Lower volatility also played a major role, as realized volatility for Bitcoin dropped from 70 percent to 45 percent across recent market cycles. Big investors prefer this calmer environment because they can hold positions longer without panicking.

Trading habits differ sharply between the two groups. While both institutions and retail traders jump in when prices surge, big players usually cash out within a single day. Retail traders tend to stick around for roughly three days. Because casual traders make up a much smaller slice of the market now, altcoin rallies tend to fade much faster than they did in past cycles.

Looking ahead, traders should watch how institutional preferences shape future market rallies. Big money tends to focus heavily on Bitcoin, Ethereum, and a select few major tokens rather than spreading cash across hundreds of small altcoins. If Wall Street continues to dominate volume, the next major price run may reward far fewer winning tokens than traders saw in past years.
