India Starts Tokenizing Corporate Bonds
India is moving its massive corporate bond market onto the blockchain to speed up transactions and reduce costs.
coinbeat.newsIndia is taking a major step toward modernizing its financial systems. The Securities and Exchange Board of India and the Reserve Bank of India have launched a pilot program to tokenize corporate bonds. By using digital tokens for these assets, the authorities aim to make the settlement process much faster and more efficient.
The project uses the wholesale digital rupee to settle trades instantly. This replaces older, slower methods that often took days to finalize. Three companies have already participated in the early phase, successfully raising around 107 million dollars through this new digital channel.
This shift is significant for the 620 billion dollar corporate bond market. If the pilot proves successful, it could set a new standard for how large debt instruments are traded across the country. Investors and financial institutions should watch for further updates as officials evaluate the results and plan a wider rollout.
