The International Monetary Fund has confirmed that El Salvador used private donations to fund its recent Bitcoin purchases. This clarification arrives as part of a staff level agreement between the country and the financial organization to reform how the government manages digital assets. Public sector involvement in crypto is shifting as the country works to improve transparency regarding its holdings.

Operational control of the Chivo digital wallet has now moved to a private operator. While the government retains a minority stake and remains responsible for safeguarding customer assets, this move signals a step back from direct state management of crypto services. The IMF also noted that it expects no further Bitcoin accumulation from the public sector beyond what has already been documented.

Looking forward, the government plans to update its legal and regulatory framework for digital assets to better manage risk. The country is currently experiencing positive economic growth, with the IMF projecting a 4.5 percent increase in GDP for the year. Improved security and stronger investor confidence are being cited as primary drivers for this current economic progress.
