LIVEIBM CEO Arvind Krishna recently stated that quantum computing will start impacting company revenue by 2028 or 2029. This forecast suggests that the technology is maturing faster than many crypto holders expected. As quantum hardware becomes more powerful, concerns grow regarding its potential to crack current encryption standards used to secure digital assets.
Currently, about 34 percent of all Bitcoin is held in addresses with exposed public keys. This represents roughly 6.8 million coins, worth approximately $437 billion. If quantum computers reach the power required to break elliptic curve cryptography, these funds could be vulnerable to unauthorized access.
Despite the clear timeline for quantum advancement, Bitcoin does not yet have a standard protocol for moving to quantum resistant security. While developers are discussing proposals like BIP 360 and BIP 361, a formal migration path remains missing. The pressure is mounting as big players like Galaxy Digital and Coinbase join the Bitcoin Security Consortium to fund research and prepare for potential threats.
Investors should watch how quickly the Bitcoin development community moves to adopt post quantum cryptography. While no quantum machine is currently capable of breaking Bitcoin encryption, the shift in commercial timelines means the window for preparation is getting smaller.
