LIVEHong Kong regulators are pushing local banks to prepare for the future threat of quantum computing, setting a strict deadline of 2030. A recent report rated the banking sector's readiness at a low 2.3 out of 10. While the government can mandate upgrades and offer specialized toolkits, the decentralized cryptocurrency space faces a much trickier path.
Bitcoin faces the exact same quantum risks, but it does not have a regulator to force change. While networks like Ethereum have foundations to guide their roadmaps, Bitcoin relies entirely on community consensus. This lack of central governance makes implementing major security upgrades incredibly difficult, as everyone must agree on the path forward.
Developers are already working on solutions. Earlier this year, a proposal called BIP 360 was added to Bitcoin's code repository to help protect certain transaction types. Another draft proposal written with Jameson Lopp, who helped found Casa, suggests phasing out older signature types. However, this move could lock out users who do not migrate their coins, including an estimated 1.7 million Bitcoin linked to Satoshi Nakamoto.
Industry experts warn that the real challenge is agreement, not technology. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju noted that the biggest bottleneck is getting the Bitcoin community to unite behind changes that touch the core design of the network. Without a deadline or a leader, the clock is ticking for the community to find common ground before quantum computers become a reality.
