LIVEA new look at Aave V3 data reveals that just under 9 percent of loan positions are responsible for half of the platform's total debt. These users are taking advantage of E mode, a feature that allows for higher borrowing limits when collateral and debt are expected to move in tandem. Most of these accounts are built on a single strategy that bets on the price relationship between Ethereum and various staking tokens like weETH and wstETH.
While these loans are designed to be efficient, they leave little room for error. The average health factor for this group sits at 1.06, which provides a slim buffer of about 6 percent before hitting liquidation levels. This makes the group sensitive to any volatility in the exchange rate between the liquid staking wrappers and standard Ethereum. If these tokens lose value relative to ETH, the collateral supporting these loans could weaken quickly.
Data suggests that an 8 to 9 percent discount in these staking tokens could push the average health factor for this group to 1, potentially triggering a wave of liquidations. Stress tests indicate that a 10 percent depeg could pull hundreds of accounts below the liquidation threshold. While the broader crypto lending market is shrinking steadily, this concentrated pocket remains a focal point for risk in the DeFi space.
