GnosisDAO Votes to Turn Gnosis Chain into Ethereum Rollup

GnosisDAO has officially voted to change the future of Gnosis Chain. By passing proposal GIP 153, the community has mandated a shift toward becoming a ZK proven Ethereum rollup. This marks a major change for a project that has historically operated as an independent Layer 1 network. The proposal gained strong support with 123,158 GNO voting in favor.

While the goal is to inherit Ethereum's security by settling on the mainnet, the transition will not happen overnight. The target launch window for this new architecture is set for late 2026 or early 2027. Developers have a significant task ahead, including bridge planning, sequencer design, and rigorous security testing. For now, users can expect the current experience to remain the same, including the use of xDAI for gas fees.

This decision represents a growing trend in the crypto industry where established chains look to align more closely with Ethereum's ecosystem. By settling on Ethereum, Gnosis aims to gain better access to shared liquidity and developer tools. Additionally, the proposal includes the unlocking of approximately 350,000 staked GNO tokens, which adds a new dimension to the project's token economics.
