LIVEBitcoin users on the GMO Coin exchange may face service interruptions this weekend as a new project called eCash prepares for an Alpha snapshot. The event is scheduled to take place at Bitcoin block 963,648, which is expected to occur around midnight Japan time on August 23. While GMO Coin has not confirmed a shutdown, the firm has warned that it might pause spot trading, deposits, withdrawals, and leveraged trading services.
The project behind the snapshot, eCash, plans to credit users with a test asset called ECX. However, confusion remains because the project roadmap refers to this as a practice phase while other documents describe it as a fork point. Because the new chain uses the same address format as Bitcoin and lacks mandatory replay protection, exchanges are concerned about the security of user transactions during the transition.
Market participants should watch for further announcements from the exchange as the block height approaches. GMO Coin emphasized that the risks include potential transaction reversals, thin liquidity, and increased price volatility. These conditions could lead to wider trading spreads or forced sales for those using margin accounts.
It is important to note that this new ECX token is not related to the existing XEC asset or the BIP 110 proposal. The exchange has clarified that the eCash project does not alter or replace your actual Bitcoin holdings. Traders should keep a close eye on their accounts and look for official updates from the exchange regarding whether a service freeze will actually take effect.
