Gate.io Denies Hiding Evidence in $1.7M Theft Dispute

Crypto exchange Gate.io is locked in a fierce public dispute with a user who lost $1.7 million in digital assets. The user, known online as Jheioff, claims their account was drained on July 8 despite having phone verification, email security, and Google two factor authentication enabled. According to Jheioff, the platform has delayed handing over crucial video facial data and risk control records to law enforcement for ten days after a criminal case was officially filed.

Jheioff states that the exchange made the process nearly impossible by raising doubts about police credentials, rejecting compressed document files over virus concerns, and asking for extra video confirmations. The user argues that these hurdles are simply tactics to stall and avoid responsibility for the security breach. Furthermore, Jheioff denies making any of the account changes that led up to the draining of the funds.

Gate.io strongly rejects these claims, calling them unfounded accusations and stating that it actually prioritized the case from day one. The exchange counters that Jheioff was slow to accept help right after the incident. Gate also points out that the legal documents sent on July 22 lacked proper credentials, had expired paperwork, and used personal contact lines instead of official channels.

Both sides now blame each other for stalling the investigation. Traders should watch how crypto exchanges handle police requests and security disputes, as platform transparency remains a major talking point across the market.
