LIVEThe FTX bankruptcy team is moving forward with a fifth distribution of funds. Starting July 31, about 900 million dollars will be sent to creditors who have finished their required paperwork. Most recipients can expect the funds to arrive in their accounts within three business days.
This payout is unique because many creditors are receiving more than the original value of their claims. International and US customers will receive 105 percent of their total, while smaller accounts are set to receive 120 percent. The extra money accounts for interest that has been calculated since the exchange collapsed in November 2022.
While this recovery process is historic, there is a trade off. All claims are being valued at 2022 crypto prices. Because the market has grown significantly since then, those who held their original assets would have seen higher gains than those receiving cash settlements today. Still, this marks a rare success story in a major exchange bankruptcy case.
Looking ahead, there is no set date for a sixth distribution. The team managing the wind down is urging users to be careful. They reminded customers that they will never ask for access to a private crypto wallet to process these payments, so users should stay alert for potential scams.
