Aaron Luneke, the former chief financial officer of Bank of the Valley, received a 36 month federal prison sentence this week. A jury convicted him in March for orchestrating a bank fraud scheme involving over four million dollars intended for a car wash construction project. The court found that Luneke exploited his high ranking position to both execute the plan and hide it from investigators.

Prosecutors stated that Luneke used inflated and entirely fake invoices between February and June 2021 to secure construction funds. He successfully obtained roughly 4.32 million dollars in loans from his own bank while attempting to secure an additional 3.5 million dollars from another institution through a refinancing scheme. To keep the fraud hidden, he reportedly used shell companies and failed to report significant personal debts.

Following his three year prison term, Luneke will serve five years of supervised release and pay a 10,000 dollar fine. Because there is no parole in the federal system, he will serve the full term. This case serves as a reminder of the strict oversight required in banking and finance, as authorities continue to crack down on fraudulent activities involving institutional loans.
