Florida Scam Ring Steals $2.2 Million From Seniors
Federal prosecutors charged three individuals for running a massive mail fraud operation that targeted elderly victims across the country.
coinbeat.newsThree Chinese nationals living illegally in the United States face charges for a mail fraud scheme that cost elderly victims over $2 million. Prosecutors say the group operated out of the Orlando area, collecting cash and money orders sent to local post office boxes. The suspects, identified as Yongbo Li, Huashan Lu, and Yuxiang Zhao, are currently in custody while authorities look for three additional suspects located in China.
The scammers contacted victims through phone calls, emails, and pop up messages. They posed as federal agents and claimed that the victims had their personal financial information compromised. To resolve these fake issues, the fraudsters told victims to mail payments to various shell companies. They also pressured seniors to keep the payments secret.
At least 28 people lost significant portions of their life savings, with some individual losses reaching as high as $240,000. Investigators noted that much of the stolen money was moved overseas and remains difficult to recover, though some funds were successfully clawed back. This case serves as a stark reminder for the crypto community to remain vigilant against social engineering and impersonation tactics.
