The Financial Action Trust Force recently shared its seventh targeted update regarding virtual asset standards. According to the report, 83 percent of surveyed jurisdictions have passed legislation to implement the Travel Rule. That is up from 73 percent last year. On paper, this points to broad global progress for standard crypto oversight.

However, the report highlights a major enforcement gap. Only 40 percent of those jurisdictions have actually taken supervisory or enforcement actions. This means many countries have written the rules into law, but they are not policing them in any meaningful way. Since crypto transactions cross borders instantly, this creates a weakest link problem where illicit actors can seek out regions with lax oversight.

The findings also point to growing regulatory focus on decentralized finance protocols, unhosted wallets, and freeze resistant stablecoins. While centralized exchanges must collect user data, decentralized systems lack clear intermediaries, making enforcement much harder. Traders and builders should watch how global watchdogs push nations to close this supervision gap in the coming months.
