LIVEEthereum core developers have officially included a proposal known as EIP 8141, or Frame Transactions, in the upcoming Hegotá upgrade. This update is currently slated for 2027 and aims to change how users interact with network gas fees. By splitting transactions into separate parts, the system allows the person sending funds to be different from the entity paying the gas fees.
This update addresses a common problem where wallet holders cannot move tokens because they lack the ETH required to pay for transaction costs. With Frames, applications or third parties could sponsor these fees for users. While the validators will still receive their payment in ETH, users could potentially settle their costs using stablecoins or other assets through an intermediary service, making the network much friendlier for those without direct ETH holdings.
Beyond gas payments, this proposal introduces new levels of flexibility for user accounts. It allows for advanced features like custom validation rules, better key management, and even the future adoption of quantum resistant security measures. This brings core elements of account abstraction directly into the base layer of the Ethereum network.
Investors should keep in mind that this is still a work in progress. EIP 8141 is currently a draft, and technical specifications are subject to change before the Hegotá upgrade goes live. While this represents a significant shift in protocol design, it does not remove ETH from the fee system, as the network will continue to require ether for all transaction processing.
