Emirates Adds Crypto Payments for UAE Residents
Emirates now accepts crypto payments via Crypto.com, but the feature is strictly limited to UAE residents.
Emirates has officially integrated Crypto.com Pay into its booking process. Travelers can now use digital assets to pay for flights on the airline website and mobile app. While this marks a significant step for crypto adoption in the travel industry, the feature is currently restricted to customers who are residents of the UAE. Furthermore, all payments must be made in Emirati dirhams.
The technical process is designed to ensure the airline does not actually hold volatile digital tokens. When a customer makes a payment, Crypto.com converts the crypto into dirhams or stablecoins approved by the Central Bank of the UAE before the funds reach Emirates. This settlement process relies on a specific license held by Crypto.com, which currently gives them a unique position in the local market.
Despite the excitement surrounding the launch, the residency requirement excludes the vast majority of international tourists visiting Dubai. This limitation comes even though previous partnership announcements focused on international travelers as a key demographic for digital payments. The timeline from the initial agreement to the launch took over a year, with most of that time spent waiting for regulatory approvals from the Central Bank.
For now, international passengers will need to stick to traditional payment methods like credit cards. Any expansion of this service to a global audience depends on future decisions by UAE regulators to allow broader settlement options and remove residency gates. For those within the UAE, the checkout process simply involves using the Crypto.com app or scanning a QR code at the time of booking.
