Elon Musk says he plans to give away almost his entire fortune. The tech billionaire agreed to a public challenge from Nobel Prize winning economist Daron Acemoglu, who asked Musk to put his money where his mouth is. The challenge came after Musk claimed that artificial intelligence and robots will soon make goods so abundant that money will lose its meaning.

Acemoglu proposed that Musk donate his massive fortune to charity by 2036. The economist argued this move would show real confidence in Musk's AI predictions while easing public worry over the immense political influence of billionaires. Musk quickly responded on X, stating that he is actually going to do something along those lines, though he did not share a specific timeline or dollar figure.

This challenge comes as Musk's net worth experiences sharp swings. His fortune fell to around 695 billion dollars on July 27 after SpaceX shares dropped to roughly 109 dollars. While Musk was briefly a trillionaire in June, SpaceX stock has since dropped about 50 percent from its peak. Even with these drops, Musk remains the wealthiest person in the world, far ahead of Jeff Bezos and Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

Investors are now keeping a close watch on SpaceX stock, which faces a share lockup expiration in August. Some analysts warn that if the stock falls below 100 dollars, it could signal a drop in investor confidence regarding Musk's AI goals.
