A group of scammers allegedly stole 40 million dollars from elderly Americans through a complex timeshare resale scheme. The fraudsters contacted victims and falsely claimed their properties had been sold, then pressured them to pay fake upfront taxes and fees to receive their non existent proceeds.

To keep up the ruse, the suspects pretended to be government officials and lawyers. One specific case highlights the severity of the crime, as two elderly residents from San Antonio lost 1.2 million dollars to the group. The perpetrators moved the stolen funds through various bank accounts in the United States to launder the money.

Authorities have now taken action against the ringleaders. Christian Felipe Rodriguez Peraza and Brenda Tamayo Corona were arrested in France and brought to Texas to face federal charges. Two other co defendants are also involved in the case.

Each person named in the indictment faces up to 20 years in prison for wire fraud and another 20 years for conspiracy to commit money laundering. Federal prosecutors are using this case to send a clear message that they are committed to stopping international criminal groups from targeting American citizens.
