Centralized crypto exchanges saw a significant cooling period in July. Spot trading volume on these platforms fell by over 31 percent to 727 billion dollars, hitting the lowest point since October 2023. While decentralized exchanges also saw a dip in activity, they remained more resilient with a much smaller decline of roughly 10 percent.

This shift in momentum resulted in decentralized exchanges capturing 19.5 percent of combined spot volume, a new record high. The change stems largely from the shrinking pool of volume at centralized venues rather than a massive surge in on chain activity. Data from major firms like Coinbase and Robinhood confirms that retail interest in spot crypto has softened even as users remain active in other risk assets like stocks and options.

Despite the decline, the market is becoming increasingly segmented. On chain activity remains heavily concentrated on chains like Solana and Base, with professional aggregators playing a major role in routing large orders. While centralized exchanges still lead price discovery for major assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum, on chain venues are becoming the primary home for newer tokens and memecoins that launch without centralized listings.

Looking ahead, market participants are watching to see if this trend holds. If tools for efficient on chain execution continue to improve, decentralized exchanges could push their total market share toward 25 percent. For now, traders and institutional desks are forced to monitor both on chain liquidity and centralized order books to get a complete view of the market.
