Balancer is moving toward a full shutdown after a series of cost cutting measures failed to return the protocol to profitability. The decentralized exchange, which previously reached a total value locked of over 3 billion dollars, has seen its footprint shrink to roughly 58 million dollars following a devastating 128 million dollar exploit last November.

Governance token holders will vote on the wind down proposal between September 25 and September 29. If approved, the protocol will halt new development and transition into an exit phase. While the team attempted to pivot toward their v3 product, they found that the shadow of the previous hack made it difficult to attract the commercial partners needed to sustain operations.

Liquidity providers will see the first major changes on October 30 as many pools transition to withdrawal only mode. The proposal outlines plans to eventually distribute remaining treasury assets to BAL holders by May 2027. Former leadership noted that while the technology worked well, it simply did not achieve the scale required to survive in a competitive market.

While the protocol itself is closing, the Balancer code will remain open source, allowing developers to fork the technology if they choose. Investors are now waiting to see if the governance vote passes, which would mark the end for one of the most significant projects in early decentralized finance.
