LIVEChangpeng Zhao recently shared his view that Bitcoin is closing in on gold. During a recent discussion at Bitcoin Asia, he suggested that the gap between the two assets could narrow significantly within the next market cycle. While gold currently holds a substantial lead in total value, Zhao pointed out that Bitcoin is gaining momentum as nations begin to consider it for their strategic reserves.
To reach the level of investable gold, which is estimated at roughly 14 trillion dollars, Bitcoin would need to see its price climb toward 700,000 dollars per coin. If Bitcoin were to match the total value of all above ground gold, including industrial and jewelry holdings, the price per coin could theoretically exceed 1.5 million dollars. These figures are fueled by the difference in how the two assets are supplied, as Bitcoin has a fixed limit while gold stocks continue to grow.
The timeline for this shift depends largely on how quickly central banks and governments adopt Bitcoin as a reserve asset. Zhao noted that shifting state reserves is a slow process that often takes years to implement. Despite this, he remains optimistic about the long term trend, provided that no other digital asset emerges to displace Bitcoin as the primary choice for investors.
Traders are watching this development closely as US lawmakers discuss proposals for a strategic Bitcoin reserve. While gold remains a popular choice for central banks, the increasing scarcity of Bitcoin offers a different appeal. For now, the market is monitoring both political sentiment and institutional demand to see if this prediction gains traction.
