Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, recently opened up about the lessons he learned from his time at the helm of the world's largest exchange. Looking back at the company's early days, he admitted that his biggest mistake was not technical, but legal. He stated that he initially focused entirely on building products for users, while failing to fully grasp how international laws and government regulations would eventually shape the business.

This gap in understanding led to significant consequences for both the exchange and Zhao himself. Binance eventually faced a massive settlement of 4.3 billion dollars, and Zhao served four months in prison following a guilty plea. He now acknowledges that he did not realize how far reaching US laws could be on a global scale. Today, he openly advises other founders to prioritize legal counsel and compliance from the very beginning.

Beyond legal hurdles, Zhao shared that he also regrets not moving faster with product development. He pointed to the late launch of Binance futures as a missed opportunity, suggesting that companies should ship products earlier to gather real market feedback. Since his release and subsequent presidential pardon, Zhao has shifted his focus toward advising governments on crypto policy, attempting to apply the hard lessons he learned during his rapid ascent in the industry.
