CME Group Brings 24/7 Trading to Tech Stocks Like Nvidia
CME Group is betting that retail traders want round the clock access to leveraged tech stocks through new single stock futures.
coinbeat.newsCME Group has launched a new set of futures contracts tied to major tech stocks like Nvidia, Apple, and Tesla. These contracts trade for 23 hours a day, allowing investors to react to earnings reports and market news long after the traditional stock market closing bell rings. By offering both standard and smaller Micro contracts, the exchange is clearly aiming to capture the interest of individual traders who are used to the always open nature of crypto markets.
Single stock futures act as a side bet on the price of a company. When these contracts expire, the difference in value is settled in cash rather than actual share delivery. Because they require only a portion of the total value as collateral, they provide built in leverage. This allows a trader to control a significant amount of stock with much less cash upfront, which amplifies both potential gains and losses.
This is not the first attempt at such a product in the United States. An earlier venture called OneChicago launched in 2002 but eventually folded after two decades of struggling to gain traction. Back then, investors already had plenty of options and alternatives to express their market views, and regulators maintained strict margin requirements that kept the market thin.
CME is banking on a different reality today. Modern traders are now accustomed to mobile brokerage apps, same day options, and the nonstop movement of the digital asset markets. Whether these new tech futures can find a permanent home in investor portfolios depends on whether they can maintain enough liquidity to keep costs low and execution smooth for the average user.
