Citibank Hit With $6.4M Fine for Breaching Russian Sanctions

Britain's sanctions regulator, the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation, has hit Citibank's London branch with a $6.39 million penalty. The fine comes after the banking giant processed 970 payments totaling 19.7 million pounds that broke rules surrounding Russian sanctions.

Most of these transfers took place between February and November 2022. They involved accounts linked to Russian shipping firm PJSC Sovcomflot as well as major financial players like Alfa Bank, PJSC Gazprombank, and Credit Bank of Moscow. While the regulator found no deliberate intent to bypass the rules, it called the oversights material and wide reaching across several business units.

Citi self reported most of the errors and cooperated fully with investigators to resolve the matter. A spokesperson for the bank said they welcomed the conclusion and noted that they remain committed to working with authorities while upgrading their internal controls.
