Circle Purchases 1,000 Blockchain Patents from IBM

Circle, the company behind the USDC stablecoin, recently reached an agreement to acquire nearly 1,000 blockchain patents from IBM. This deal adds a significant library of intellectual property to the stablecoin issuer’s existing operations.

IBM holds over 680 patent families that cover a wide range of distributed ledger technology. A large portion of these patents focuses on supply chain management and tracking systems. By bringing these assets under its own control, Circle is clearly signaling a long term commitment to building out its own infrastructure.

This move puts Circle in a stronger position to protect its own innovations and potentially license technology to other firms.
