Circle Becomes Top U.S. Patent Holder After Buying 1,000 From IBM

Circle is now the largest holder of blockchain patents in the United States. The stablecoin issuer recently acquired nearly 1,000 patents from IBM. While the financial details remain private, the deal includes over 680 patent families covering finance, banking, cloud security, and enterprise infrastructure.

This move strengthens Circle as it grows its core products, including USDC and the Arc blockchain. By owning these rights, the company aims to protect its infrastructure while building new tools for AI agents and global payments. The company previously joined the LOT Network to defend itself against patent trolls, and this new portfolio is a major step in securing its technology.

This acquisition comes at a busy time for the firm. Circle recently gained federal approval for its new national trust bank. With these new patents in hand, the company is positioning itself to compete more effectively as the market for digital payments gets crowded with new rivals.
