LIVECircle and Coinbase have officially renewed their agreement for USDC support for another three years. While the core economics remain stable, the updated contract introduces specific performance thresholds that allow Circle to withhold certain payments if Coinbase fails to meet product or reseller requirements.
These new terms feature specific grace periods for Coinbase to fix potential issues. If Coinbase misses a product support target, it has 60 days to resolve the problem. If it misses a reseller target, it gets 90 days. Even if these windows expire, the agreement includes a lengthy transition period where Coinbase can continue to collect payments for up to a full year, making these changes a slow moving shift in contract leverage rather than an immediate change to payouts.
This update is significant because of the sheer volume of assets involved. Coinbase recently reported that average USDC holdings across its products hit 20 billion dollars in the second quarter. With Coinbase holding over 30 percent of the total USDC in circulation, the partnership remains a critical pillar for both companies.
Looking ahead, the market will keep an eye on how these thresholds affect day to day operations. Neither company has reported any issues with these new metrics, and for now, the business relationship continues as it did before. The added rules simply formalize the path for Circle to pressure specific payment streams if standards are not met in the future.
