A new report shows that the BRICS alliance has significantly reduced its reliance on the US dollar for cross border trade. Current data reveals that only 35 percent of transactions between member nations now use the dollar, while 65 percent are settled in local currencies. This shift reflects a multi year effort by these countries to lower transaction fees and strengthen their own financial standing.

Key members such as China, Russia, and India are leading this change. Russia and China frequently settle payments in yuan and rubles, while India has utilized rupees and dirhams for various deals. Sanctioned nations like Iran have also turned to the Chinese yuan to keep trade moving. Saudi Arabia has even started accepting the yuan for certain oil agreements.

Despite this momentum, the de dollarization effort has recently faced pressure. Following the reelection of Donald Trump, the alliance temporarily paused its formal push to move away from the dollar. This pause comes as a direct response to threats of heavy tariffs on member nations. Markets will be watching closely to see if this trend resumes or if the alliance maintains its current stance to avoid international trade penalties.
