Bitcoin Users Scramble After Coldcard Seed Generation Flaw
A serious security vulnerability in Coldcard hardware wallets has triggered a massive wave of Bitcoin transfers as users race to secure their funds.

LIVEA recently discovered bug in Coldcard hardware wallets has revealed that many Bitcoin holders were using wallets with significantly weaker security than they believed. The flaw occurred during the random number generation process, which is responsible for creating a secure recovery phrase. Because the device failed to pull from a true hardware random source, the seeds it generated were predictable, making it possible for attackers to reconstruct private keys.
The issue affected several Coldcard models, including the Mk2, Mk3, Mk4, Mk5, and Q versions. By failing to use the intended random source, the device created a limited search space for potential keys. While updating the firmware fixes the issue for future seed generation, it does not retroactively secure a wallet created with the faulty software. Users who were affected need to generate an entirely new seed and transfer their Bitcoin to that new wallet to ensure safety.
The news has caused widespread panic and a massive defensive migration of funds. On chain data shows that over 77,000 BTC moved from older wallets following the disclosure as users acted to protect their savings. While estimates of actual theft remain in the range of 1,300 BTC, the vast majority of the movement appears to be a mass exodus of cautious investors moving their coins to new, secure addresses.
This incident highlights a major lesson in digital storage. Even when a device is kept offline, the initial creation of the private key is the most critical step in security. Many experts recommend using physical dice to generate your own entropy, ensuring that you control the randomness of your seed rather than relying solely on a manufacturer's code.
