Bitcoin Traders Drop Crash Protection Before Fed Decision
Bitcoin traders are lowering their hedging activity just as the Federal Reserve faces its most uncertain policy meeting in years.

LIVEBitcoin traders have quietly reduced their downside protection over the past month. The put to call open interest ratio dropped to 0.52 from 0.76 back in June. This shift suggests that market participants are feeling less need to insure their positions against a sudden price drop, even as the Federal Reserve prepares for an unusually difficult rate decision.
While traders are pulling back on hedges, the actual cost of protection remains a point of focus. The premium paid for short term downside protection, known as put skew, has cooled down to 9 percent from 13 percent last week. This indicates a general easing of panic, even though large groups of call options at the 70,000 and 72,000 price levels remain on the books for the July 31 expiry.
The upcoming Fed announcement is viewed by experts as one of the most unpredictable meetings in several years. Since the committee is not releasing new economic projections, every word in the official statement and every comment from Chair Kevin Warsh will be scrutinized. Traders are watching to see if the central bank holds rates steady or opts for a quarter point hike.
If the Fed signals a tougher stance or raises rates, Bitcoin may face immediate selling pressure as liquidity conditions tighten. A softer tone from the committee could provide the lift needed for the asset to move toward the high strike price calls before they expire. Investors are now watching the two year Treasury yield for the first sign of how the market interprets the official policy path.
