LIVEThe second quarter was a bumpy ride for Bitcoin, with the price falling 14.2 percent. Despite this, data from 13F filings shows that institutional holdings in spot Bitcoin ETFs rose 7.5 percent. Total holdings climbed from roughly 498,000 BTC to over 535,000 BTC, suggesting that professional investors were busy buying the dip.
Ownership patterns became more concentrated during this period. While the total number of institutions reporting positions dropped by about 6.8 percent, those remaining in the market increased their overall exposure. Financial giants like JPMorgan boosted their holdings significantly, increasing their IBIT share count by over 25 percent. Renaissance Technologies also made a major move, more than quadrupling its position.
Not every player followed the same strategy. While hedge funds like Brevan Howard and Citadel made large reductions in their ordinary share positions, these moves are difficult to read. Both firms reported complex options strategies that complicate the simple narrative of a bearish exit. Meanwhile, major sovereign wealth funds, including Abu Dhabi and groups like Harvard Management, kept their positions steady throughout the downturn.
These mixed results highlight a split on Wall Street. Tactical traders moved in and out of the market to manage short term risk, while long term holders stood their ground. Investors should watch how these sovereign funds react in the coming months, as their refusal to trim shares suggests a high level of conviction despite the broader market volatility.
