Bitcoin miner Ionic Digital had a strong start on the Nasdaq on Tuesday. The stock climbed more than 25 percent from its opening price of $50 to trade near $63, giving the company a valuation close to $2.75 billion. Ionic went public through a direct listing instead of a traditional initial public offering, meaning existing shareholders sold their shares directly without the company raising fresh capital.

The firm has an interesting history, having emerged in January 2024 from the bankruptcy proceedings of lender Celsius Network. Ionic took over substantial mining gear, cash, and bitcoin holdings from the fallout. While the company still operates four mining sites in Texas and holds a sizable bitcoin treasury, it is also making a major push into artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Ionic recently signed a ten year deal to lease its large Texas facility to an artificial intelligence cloud provider. This agreement brings in significant contracted revenue and follows a path similar to other miners like Hut 8 and TeraWulf. Traders should watch how these dual strategies of bitcoin mining and artificial intelligence hosting perform as the company settles into life as a publicly traded stock.
