Australia Sets Strict Sept 30 Crypto Licensing Deadline
Australian crypto firms face a hard September deadline to secure licenses or prepare to exit the regulated market.
coinbeat.newsThe Australian Securities and Investments Commission has issued a final warning to crypto companies operating within the country. Firms that offer services classified as financial products must enter a compliance pathway by September 30. This includes applying for a license, becoming an authorized representative, or notifying the regulator of plans to transition their business model.
After October 1, companies that have not met these conditions will lose their temporary no action protection. The regulator noted that failure to comply could result in severe civil and criminal penalties, including fines reaching 10 percent of a firm’s annual turnover. The authority has already received over 45 applications for digital asset authorizations since updating its guidance late last year.
Not every crypto business falls under this specific mandate, as the requirement depends on the specific nature of the products offered. Assets that act as financial products are the primary focus of this crackdown. Businesses that do not wish to undergo the licensing process have the option to wind down their operations, provided they notify the regulator by the same September deadline.
This update marks the end of an extended grace period that previously moved from June to September. Investors should watch for announcements from major Australian crypto exchanges and service providers as they scramble to finalize their regulatory status before the clock runs out.
