Australia Cleans House by Removing 45 Crypto Firms

Australia's financial crime watchdog, AUSTRAC, has taken a firm stance by cancelling or suspending 45 cryptocurrency and money transfer firms over the past year. The agency cited a variety of reasons for these removals, ranging from business insolvency and inactivity to a total failure to report necessary operational changes. In several serious cases, regulators flagged these companies for posing high risks related to money laundering and terrorism financing.

One notable name caught in the crackdown is GetCoins, operated by BA Digital Ventures. AUSTRAC targeted the firm following an influx of customer complaints and concerns that its services were being used to facilitate investment scams. The regulator worked alongside the National Anti Scam Centre to investigate, ultimately deciding the company could not properly manage its exposure to financial crime.

This move is part of a broader push by Australian authorities to tighten the rules for digital asset providers and payment companies. AUSTRAC has also recently launched investigations into major players like Western Union and suspended other services that operate crypto ATMs. The agency warns that any business failing to meet strict reporting standards or risk management obligations will face similar consequences.

The regulator has made it clear that it will keep removing entities that do not align with national safety protocols.
