Anthropic Finalizes Record $1.5 Billion Copyright Settlement

A federal judge approved a $1.5 billion settlement on Monday between authors and AI firm Anthropic. This marks the largest payout ever recorded in a United States copyright case. The legal battle began in 2024 when authors alleged that the company used thousands of pirated books to train its Claude chatbot.

While a previous judge ruled that training AI on books constitutes fair use, he also determined that Anthropic broke the law by storing over seven million pirated files. The new agreement requires the company to destroy these files and provide payments to the affected authors. Each eligible work will receive about $3,000, which is four times the typical minimum penalty for copyright infringement.

Judge Araceli Martinez Olguin dismissed complaints from some authors who argued the settlement amount was too small. She noted that the deal provides a realistic outcome compared to the uncertainties of a full trial. This case sets a significant precedent for how AI companies handle intellectual property moving forward.
