Anthropic Adopts SpaceX IPO Playbook Ahead of September Debut
AI giant Anthropic plans to give its founders supervoting shares before its public market launch, borrowing a trick from Elon Musk.
Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic is gearing up for a public market debut as early as September. Reports show the company plans to award CEO Dario Amodei and his co founders supervoting shares. This move aims to protect the leadership team from short term pressure by outside shareholders after the stock lists.
The strategy mirrors approaches used by tech giants like Google and Meta, and more recently by Elon Musk with SpaceX. By holding stock with extra voting power, insiders keep firm control over company direction. For Anthropic, the setup shares similarities with SpaceX, but includes a major twist. Instead of concentrating all voting power in one single person, Anthropic plans to distribute the extra votes among multiple co founders.
Another key difference involves oversight. Anthropic operates as a Public Benefit Corporation and uses an independent body called the Long Term Benefit Trust. Trustees, including former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke, help choose board members to protect the company AI safety mission alongside profit goals.
Investors eyeing the upcoming stock offering will trade financial upside for diluted voting power. As the expected September timeline approaches, market participants await the final S 1 filings to see the exact vote ratios and governance terms.
