AMD Stock Jumps After Massive New Anthropic Deal
AMD shares surged following a major agreement to supply AI chips and software to the creator of Claude.
AMD shares jumped roughly twelve percent after Anthropic agreed to deploy up to two gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 graphics processing units. As part of the agreement, AMD will also invest up to five billion dollars in the Claude maker. This makes Anthropic the third major gigawatt scale artificial intelligence customer for AMD in just nine months, following similar deals with OpenAI and Meta.
Unlike previous agreements, this new deal does not include massive share warrants for the customer, which pleased Wall Street investors. Anthropic will utilize AMD Helios rack systems, combining advanced graphics chips, processors, and software. The first gigawatt of computing power is scheduled to arrive in the first half of 2027, with shipments of the new hardware remaining on track.
The massive partnership adds fuel to the ongoing competition with market leader Nvidia, while boosting the broader semiconductor sector. Traders will now watch to see if AMD can continue securing top artificial intelligence labs without giving away large equity stakes, especially as wider technology stocks face regulatory and economic pressures.
