Amazon shares rallied hard following a second quarter earnings report that beat expectations across the board. Total revenue reached $200.6 billion, marking a 20 percent increase compared to the previous year. Operating income climbed 43 percent to $27.5 billion. Investors focused heavily on the cloud division, where quarterly revenue surged 36.7 percent to $42.2 billion, matching its fastest growth pace in eighteen quarters.

Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy highlighted the massive expansion during the earnings call, noting that artificial intelligence and custom chip businesses have each crossed a $25 billion annual run rate. To keep up with heavy demand, Amazon raised its capital expenditure forecast for the year to $220 billion. Executives warned that capacity constraints for artificial intelligence infrastructure will likely persist through this year and into next year.

Looking ahead, third quarter net sales guidance was projected between $197 billion and $202 billion, coming in slightly below consensus estimates due to the timing of Prime Day and currency headwinds. Even with higher spending and cautious near term guidance, the market rewarded the strong cloud performance. Traders will watch closely to see if cloud momentum can continue offsetting rising logistics and infrastructure costs in the upcoming quarters.
